Past Present Future
For 10,000 years agriculture was sustainable. Productivity was low, but the population was small (<2 billion) and resources were plentiful. The 20th century brought new technologies and dramatic increases in agricultural production, as the population expanded to 7 billion. Today's high productivity agriculture depends on massive inputs of non-renewable energy, water and chemicals. This is not sustainable.

Over the next 3 decades the Earth's population will increase to 9 BILLION.

Billions will adopt inefficient meat-based diets. New industrial crops like biofuels will compete for ever more limited resources. Agricultural yields must be doubled or demand will continue to exceed production, driving prices higher. Economic and geo-political instabilities will increase.

We need to fix this. It won’t be easy.
